Outpatient gastrointestinal service

The medicine team is pleased to be able to provide a ‘stand-alone’ endoscopy service. The aim of this service is to assist your veterinary practice in the diagnostic investigations of your patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease in instances when intestinal biopsies are required.  Full thickness surgical biopsies are possible, and sometimes diagnostically more accurate, but surgical complications, particularly when the gastrointestinal mucosa is already damaged, are potentially significant.

The intention of this service is to provide the veterinary practitioner access to the benefits of gastrointestinal endoscopy, performed by specialists, while simultaneously allowing practitioners to manage their own cases independently. There is no medicine consultation with the client involved in this service and advice on treatment is not routinely provided. However if interpretation of pathology, treatment and management advice is required on individual cases then this may be provided if requested at the time of referral. Cases requiring prior stabilisation should be referred according to normal procedures.

What is included in this service?

  • Anaesthesia

  • Patient preparation (colonic cleansing prior to large intestinal endoscopy)

  • Endoscopy procedure (upper GI or lower GI or both upper and lower GI combined)

  • Biopsies  which will be submitted for pathology

  • Hospitalisation

  • Written report- Initially an interim report will be sent within one working day. A final report will be sent when histological results are available (usually within 5 working days).

  • You are then able to discuss the histopathology results and subsequent case management with the owners in your own practice. If interpretation of the pathology and treatment or management advice is desired then please indicate this at the time of referral as this can be provided but will incur a small additional fee.

Please see the Outpatient Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Service information leaflet for criteria for access to this service. (PDF link here)
