Anaesthesia is the medical discipline with the focus of finding and utilising means to carry out surgery and medical procedures safely and without pain. Anaesthesia may be relatively simple from numbing the skin in preparation for a catheter to using combinations of drugs to cause unconsciousness in preparation for major surgery.

Veterinary Anaesthesia at WAVES
The anaesthesia service provides support to all areas of the hospital anaesthetising high-risk patients for a wide variety of procedures. Patient in the high-risk category require advanced anaesthesia techniques and intensive monitoring to provide the best possible outcomes.
Common procedures where a specialist anaesthetist may be involved include:
- Cardiac surgery
- Thoracic surgery
- Abdominal surgery with potential for massive haemorrhage
- Elderly patients
- Critically ill patients
- Patients with other co-morbidities eg heart disease
In addition to undertaking anaesthetic procedures, the anaesthesia service also performs analgesic evaluations for patients with poorly controlled chronic pain to ensure a good quality of life.
